Institute of Directors, Pall Mall
The I.O.D is situated in the heart of London's West End and provides a prestigious environment in which to conduct a variety of business meetings. The building dates back to the 19th Century and is Grade 1 Listed. Within the building there is a choice of meeting rooms, a restaurant, brassiere and wine bar plus a library, all of which required air conditioning which had to be installed in keeping with the sumptuous surroundings of the I.O.D.
The system had to be designed to accommodate the requirements of both English Heritage and the client, Head of Facilities at the I.O.D. Much forethought had to be carried out in order to ensure that the aesthetic nature of the building was preserved together with a requirement for the installation to take place with minimum disruption to the day-to-day running of the I.O.D.
To accommodate these requirements, Daikin VRV systems were chosen with concealed floor standing units fitted into the window recesses in the function rooms, where maintaining the palatial look for the room was of the utmost importance. In more modern areas such as the library, wall-mounted units and ceiling mounted cassettes were used since, in this area, space was the main consideration. In order to conceal the outdoor units, no mean feat in a central London location where space is of premium, some were located in the interior hollow of the building whilst others were placed in the moat around the back of the building.
