Space Airconditioning plc was nominated to supply 3 x Daikin EUWA 200 MZ, air cooled chillers, for the major part of a substantial M&E Services upgrade and replacement programme for the prestigious 451 bedroom, five star, InterContinental London on Hyde Park Corner.
Once the order had been placed speed was of the essence to ensure that the tight delivery schedule was met. Despite everyone's best efforts, the weather played its part in a brief delay when gusting winds meant that the first 2 attempts to crane-lift the chillers onto the hotel's roof had to be aborted. Third time lucky and all three chillers were successfully positioned.
A spokesman for Space Air stated "The EUWA 200MZ is the largest air cooled chiller in the Daikin range and has a nominal cooling capacity of 575kW. The screw compressors provide unequalled reliability and will require overhaul only after some 4 1/2 years of continuous operation.
The chillers are controlled by Daikin's Integrated Chiller Network system (DICN) and also communicate with the hotel's BMS system.
The DICN system enables all three chillers to operate simultaneously, as if they were a single unit, in order to deliver the necessary cooling capacity. This system results in flexible yet precise and highly efficient capacity control and guarantees optimum plant operation at all times".
Paul Carr, Regional Chief Engineer for the InterContinental Hotels Group commented, "a number of factors influenced our decision to specify Daikin from Space Air but, importantly theirs was the only chiller presented which met the strict planning constraints relating to operating noise and size of units placed on the hotel by Westminster council". Mr Carr continued, "Space Air was instrumental throughout the procurement process in the specification of the units, working closely with the hotel and the consultants, McLellan and Partners Ltd. Space Air supported the main contractor Lorne Stewart during the installation and also commissioned the chillers. Finally Space Air provided essential training for our maintenance staff. We now have an excellent Daikin chiller system that will satisfy the air conditioning requirements of this hotel for many years to come."
