BSJ Webinar 2008

Space Air's Marketing and Business Development Manager, Mike Nankivell recently took part in a video recorded "webinar" on the subject of "Specifying for Hotels."

Organised through the Building Services Journal, this Webinar was the first of its type (where the speakers could be seen presenting in addition to the slide programme) to be broadcast live on the internet. Filmed in a London television studio, on the 9th December, the 3 speakers and compere found themselves thrust under the spotlights to present this CPD accredited series of seminars.

The seminars focused on key aspects of building services design for hotels. The development of new hotels and refurbishment of existing ones is continuing at an unprecedented rate, and is providing new challenges and opportunities for the sector.

Leading manufacturers representing water heating, air conditioning and electrical systems shared best practice advice from among their most successful applications. Viewers had the chance to submit questions and comments to the panel during the live event.

The speakers included:

  1. Professor Tim Dwyer
    Professor, Dept of Engineering Systems
Faculty of Engineering, Science and the Built Environment
    London South Bank University
  2. Paul Marsden
    UK Sales Manager
    Lochinvar
  3. Alastair Ramsay
Marketing Manager, Wiring Devices and Systems
    Legrand Electric
  4. Mike Nankivell
    Marketing and Business Devolopment Manager
    Space Airconditioning plc

Commenting on the experience Mike said:

"I don't think I will be taking up television presenting any time soon! It's only when you see yourself on the small screen that you become aware that you have a face (and facial expressions) better suited to radio!

There was very little opportunity for any rehearsal, it was very hot under those spotlights and occasionally there were problems with the display monitor moving slides forward too quickly – hence some of the anxious glances to the side of the camera. Although we were advised to take it all in a light-hearted fashion – this is easier said than done in such an unfamiliar environment. Never-the-less the seminar programme was, by all accounts, very well received and encouraged many interesting questions both during and since the broadcast".

Mike concluded, "I would like to think, should I be asked to do anything similar again, that I can learn from my more obvious mistakes and perhaps take some lessons in how to appear more relaxed, less stern and with fewer facial contortions! At least I do not expect to receive any fan mail or the attention of stalkers as a result of this event! "
